Causes and Symptoms of Hand and Wrist Pain and Numbness
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a repetitive motion injury of the hand and wrist. It most commonly occurs in individuals that work with their hands of a regular basis, including typists, secretaries, stockers, warehouse workers, gardeners, electricians and plumbers. It usually occurs in the dominant hand, but can occur in both wrists.
Carpal tunnel is caused by an inflammation or irritation of the median nerve that runs from the forearm, through the wrist and into the hand. It is responsible for the movement and feeling in the thumb and first three fingers. The pinky finger is controlled by a different nerve.
Inflammation of the ligaments or minor misalignments of the bones in the wrist can narrow the carpal tunnel that the median nerve travels through. When this happens, the nerve becomes compressed, and individuals feel pain, numbness and tingling in their forearms, wrists, hands and fingers. In severe instances, individuals can feel pain up to their elbow, and untreated cases can lead to a wasting of the muscle that controls the thumb.
Traditional medicine usually recommend surgery for treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome, but many individual shy away from surgery due to the long recovery times, low success rates and high chances of recurrence.
Chiropractic Care for Carpal Tunnel
Chiropractic care for carpal tunnel involves making an accurate diagnosis and finding the sources of your median nerve inflammation and compression to successfully heal the injuries. We do this at our Palmdale chiropractic office by performing a thorough physical examination and by creating a comprehensive treatment plan that could include chiropractic adjustments, localized massage therapy, wrist supports and ultrasound.
Chiropractic adjustments are recommended if the bones in your wrist are slightly misaligned. This treatment option forces your joints into their proper alignment and increases the space inside the carpal tunnel.
Localized massage therapy helps make the adjustments more comfortable and promotes circulation to the area.
Ultrasound is a physiotherapy treatment that utilizes sound waves to facilitate healing. The waves of sound cannot be heard by the human ear. Instead, they silently penetrate deep into the skin, muscles, ligaments and soft tissues to help the healing process. It helps carpal tunnel by relaxing the muscles and reducing inflammation, which reduces pain and discomfort.
Wrist supports are used to help keep your wrist properly aligned while you are recovering. The support stabilizes and partially immobilizes the wrist so that it cannot be further injured while you are undergoing treatment, and it gives the wrist time to heal.
