Gua Sha at Dewald Chiropractic
Here at Dewald Chiropractic we take pride in offering the most effective combinations of natural pain relief and healing therapies. One of the most extraordinary of these techniques, Gua Sha, is also one of the most well-known in the world of Asian folk medicine -- and medical research shows that it works.
What Is Gua Sha?
Gua Sha is a very old healing technique, a staple of the diverse and powerful world of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It involves applying massage oil to the skin and then scraping the skin with a blunt instrument to relieve pain both at the treatment as well as referred pain in other parts of the body. The scraping motion produces short-term redness and inflammation at the site itself, but not to the point of bleeding or injury. The redness fades within a matter of days, leaving patients with significantly less back pain, neck pain and other chronic pain problems. Even more remarkably, Gua Sha has been used to treat a variety of systemic conditions and symptoms, from respiratory disorders and fevers to fibromyalgia and hepatitis.
Gua Sha's Healing and Pain Relief Benefits
The mechanism behind Gua Sha's magic seems to be its effect on circulation in the capillaries, the tiny blood vessels that directly nourish the tissues. Many forms of pain and inflammation are related to sluggish capillary circulation, or microperfusion. The stroking action of Gua Sha increases microperfusion, allowing red blood cells to escape from the area and take inflammation with them. This accounts for the red marks (petachiae) caused by the technique, which indicate improve blood flow, not damage.
The boost to your circulation can have a positive impact on virtually any inflammatory condition. Studies of patients with hepatitis B have verified the potential systemic benefits. They also indicate that Gua Sha releases an antioxidant enzyme called HemeOxygenase-1 that protects cells from oxidative damage. This makes it a useful complement to the other natural, non-invasive healing techniques we provide here at Dewald Chiropractic -- and a possible element in your own integrated healing or pain management plan.
Learn More About Gua Sha from Our Chiropractor
Our Palmdale chiropractor, Dr. Dewald, will always evaluate your condition, medical history and symptoms with great care before prescribing any kind of therapy, including Gua Sha. If it looks like you could benefit from this techniques, we will discuss how it works and what to expect from a treatment session. The strokes are typically administered either at the site of your discomfort or along the back in parallel patterns.
The treated area will appear especially red immediately following the initial Gua Sha session as the first red blood cells are released; subsequent sessions may cause less and less redness. But you shouldn't experience any significant discomfort from the treatment itself.
